Why moral relativism is for stupid people.

Tyrone Genade

Moral relativism holds that there is no absolute right nor wrong, and hence no absolute truth nor lie, but that all truths are equal in validity so it doesn't matter what you believe.

At this point the thinking individual will declare that this is rubbish as lies certainly exist. He/she may even concede to telling a lie (never mind being lied to), and that these lies were in obvious and logical contradiction to the truth. So, if lies, and by default truth, exist then by extension right and wrong must also exist as lies are statements that are wrong in respect to the alternative: truth. As right and wrong exist, moral relativism must be wrong as its central premise is destroyed by the existence of lies.

Lets look at another line of reasoning. If all truths are equal, then truths A, B, C, D, and E are all equally valid. That is to say: A=B=C=D=E. But truth C, as its central premise, is adamant that it is not in any way equivalent to A, B, D nor E. That is: C ¹ ABDE.

Obviously, from this mathematical rational, all truths cannot be equally correct if even one of the truths is so contradictory as to preclude the others. Somewhere something must be wrong. And if one is wrong then they all must be wrong for moral relativism to hold true. (But if moral relativism is true then all the truths must be correct...)

Either A, B, C, D, and E are all lies or one is true. Assuming they are all wrong, then there must be a truth X out there by logical extension (lies can't exist without a truth) that is right.

In any event, the central premise of moral relativism is again shown to be false (and end in incongruent circular reasoning): there are lies and wrong, which implies there is truth and right.

How does one find what is right and true? Examine the evidence. The lies will stick out like thumbs. Truth is a bit harder to isolate.

One last thought, the proof is in the pudding. How has moral relativism helped the world? How has it boosted charity? Reduced suffering, hurt, brought more justice into the world? Can you find one person whom it has really helped?
